Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

A flat stomach is a hallmark of youth. But sometimes, as we age, our body shape tends to change, especially around the belly area, even despite taking the most appropriate nutrition and regular exercise.
Nonetheless, in these cases, a firm and toned abdomen is possible thanks to abdominoplasty, a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin laxity in the abdominal area.

When abdominoplasty can be performed

Following pregnancy, where you have gained more weight than you should, in cases of a drastic and sudden weight loss that has left excess sagging skin, or even following prolonged period of an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle that irreparably affects the area. Muscles and skin sagging can be effectively corrected with abdominal surgery, dermolipectomy or abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty

The abdominoplasty procedure involves the removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue from the middle and lower abdomen in order to correct excess skin and adipose deposits, thereby making the abdomen firmer and thinner.

In cases where muscles are wasted and relaxed, with the appearance of a median abdominal hernia, it is necessary to reinforce or completely rebuild the muscle wall, but also to reshape the contour of the abdomen starting from the deep layer.

Complete abdominoplasty requires moving the navel and creating a neo-navel. In simpler cases, however, a less invasive intervention, called mini-abdominoplasty or dermolipectomy, is possible and advised.

Abdominoplasty for men

Frequently requested by male patients, abdominoplasty can prove to be a very satisfactory intervention, in some cases even able to give a definition with muscle bands clearly visible. This is even more apparent when the patient, motivated by the results, adjusts their diet and gets into a regular habit of including a targeted workout in their daily routine.

Male abdominoplasty is particularly requested by previously obese men between 40 and 50 years of age.

Results of abdominoplasty

The purpose of this intervention is not “slimming”, and it isn’t meant to replace a healthy lifestyle and diet: it focuses on the aesthetic improvement of the abdomen and abdominal area, once you have reached your ideal weight and condition.

«The results of abdominoplasty, in case of skin flaccidity, are proportional to the length of the scar that must be kept in an area that can be easily hidden by underwear. For fatty excesses, on the other hand, liposuction significantly solves the problem.»

In summary

For whom it is appropriate

In any case of relaxation, excess or sagging skin and/or muscles of the abdomen. This operation is also effective for abdominal ptosis, a prominent or wrinkled abdomen, strong skin relaxation with evident diastasis of the rectus abdominal muscles. Abdominoplasty is in growing demand by male patients, since in some cases, this intervention can contribute in achieving a truly sculpted abdomen, with the appearance of the classic ab-packs. Obviously, the patient must also engage with a targeted work-out and healthy diet.

Age

The complete abdominoplasty or mini-abdominoplasty surgery can be performed at any age, and is particularly effective following pregnancy, especially in twin birth cases.

F.A.Q.

What are the risks of abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty can involve the usual surgical risks, in particular hematoma and its opposite, i.e. deep vein thrombosis, which must be prevented with immediate mobilization (the patient must walk and possibly be treated with heparin for a time).

It depends on the extent of the intervention and individual subjectivity but, in general, many patients return to their normal daily activities as early as two days after the abdominoplasty operation.

Yes, you can become pregnant after undergoing abdominoplasty surgery, in the usual way.

You can safely take a shower following tummy tuck surgery, taking care to avoid wetting the incision as long as there are sutures.
