Breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a delicate plastic-reconstructive procedure that involves many considerations, both on an aesthetic as well as psychological level. The surgery should be interpreted as an integral part of the therapeutic procedure for breast cancer and a consequent mastectomy (removal of one or both breasts), or a reconstruction with an expander (expandable implant) to recreate the shape of a breast.
When to undertake breast reconstruction
Whether it is done during or after a mastectomy, the initial reconstruction is sometimes not satisfactory, so the patient feels the need for further improvement, especially if the new breast (in case of single breast reconstruction) shows asymmetries or looks different compared with the other.
